Purple Snowflakes

/

about

Shoegaze/dreampop duo powerhouse Voluptuous Panic are back with their annual Christmas single Purple Snowflakes, which will be released Wednesday, December 1. This single is a lush rendition of Marvin Gaye’s sparkling and wistful “Purple Snowflakes.”

“Purple Snowflakes” was written by Dave Hamilton and Clarence Paul and was recorded by Gaye in 1964. The song was shelved until it was released posthumously in 1992. It was re-recorded in 1965 with different lyrics as “Pretty Little Baby,” becoming a top-40 hit.

In Voluptuous Panic’s reimagining of this holiday deep cut, Brian J. Bowe’s wall of atmospheric guitar and synth envelop the listener in sonic texture, while the driving bass lends propulsion. The instrumental tracks provide a backdrop to showcase Gretchen DeVault’s towering vocals and luxuriant harmonies, constructing a sentimental sonic cathedral. The duo is joined by singer Jasmine Brooke White, who added additional backing vocals.
